Searching, downloading and converting internet videos with MyTube BIGPACK 5
No frills, no learning curve and, most importantly, no problems. With MyTube BIGPACK 5, you can search, download and convert millions of music tracks and videos for just a small amount of money – or even for free.
Step 1: Find videos online
Start MyTube BIGPACK 5 from the start menu, using the symbol on the desktop or using the link in the quick-start area of the Windows task-bar.
In the function bar within the program window, click on the ‘Find videos online’ button, enter the search term in the search screen (‘Search for’) and activate or deactivate the video platforms to be searched. Then enter the ‘Number of hits per portal’ and click on the ‘Search’ button.
The list window shows you all the clips found as thumbnail images. You can then send these to the player and/or downloader either using the context-specific menu (right-hand mouse button) or using the little symbols.
Right-clicking on one of the thumbnails (or on the relevant symbol directly within the preview) brings up the following search module options:
Play video: Allows the selected clip to be played in the built-in media player.
To playlist: Sends the address to a playlist where you can watch your videos and refine your selection.
To download list: Adds the address of the selected clip to the list of videos to be downloaded.
To clipboard: Copies the video address to the Windows clipboard.
To internet browser: Opens the selected video in your default browser.
Tip: ‘Hovering’ the mouse cursor over a preview starts the video playing.
Step 2: Play videos
The second program module contains the playlist of all the video clips you selected to play from the search module. It is a valuable instrument for handling the video clips selected in the search module and allows, among other things, the videos to be streamed directly from their current location on the internet.
The list also contains information on the relevant portal, the clip length and the video title. You can also use the right-hand menu to remove individual items from the list, empty the entire list and, as in the search module, add videos to the download list or start them in a web browser.
Tip: An extended surf around the internet will often reveal interesting findings which you do not want to lose but you end up with no time to actually look at what you have found. This is why you can create playlists which contain all the information on the relevant videos and which you can load again at a later date.
If you select an entry using the mouse, the media player automatically starts streaming a preview of the video in question.
Like any other software player, the MyTube player allows you to stop, pause and resume playing a paused video or to navigate to specific sections using a slider. At the same time, you can control the sound output, mute the sound and show the video in full-screen mode.
Step 3: Download videos
You can find all the videos you selected during the search and/or preview in the next program module, the download list. The download list is valid for the duration of a session, i.e. for as long as the program is open, and can be filled with additional entries either using one of the previous modules or manually. Unlike the playlist, the download list cannot be saved.
Even when you are currently browsing one of the video platforms supported, you can use MyTube as a downloader.
To do this, copy the address of the video you are interested in to the Windows clipboard and then paste it into the ‘Video URL’ input box in the program.
Then press on the ‘Add’ button to add the video to the download list.
Alternatively, you can enter the web address for a video manually.
The context-specific menu for each entry allows you to manage the entries in the download list:
- Delete entry: Removes the selected entry from the list.
- Delete all entries: Clears the list completely.
- Open video in internet browser: Starts your browser and takes you directly to the website for the relevant video online.
- Select/deselect entry: Selects the relevant entry for download or removes it from the list.
- Select/deselect all entries: Selects all list entries for download or removes the entire list.
- Add to video list automatically: Automatically adds the video for the entry currently selected to the list of videos to be converted after download.
- Apply selection to all entries: Adds all videos to the list of videos to be converted after download.
- Add to audio list automatically: Automatically adds the audio track for the entry currently selected to the list of audio files to be converted after download.
- Apply selection to all entries: Adds all videos to the list of audio files to be converted after download.
- Add to playlist automatically: Automatically adds the video for the current entry selected to the playlist.
- Apply selection to all entries: Adds all videos to the playlist.
‘Destination path’ allows you to define the storage location for the videos to be downloaded, then clicking on ‘Start download’ initiates the process and loads each video to your computer in sequence based on the list.
Note: Sometimes, platform operators remove videos without updating the search index immediately. Please consult our FAQs for these and other cases where video web addresses lead nowhere.
Step 4: Convert videos
The videos are downloaded in the standard formats used on video platforms, either FLV (Flash video with MP3 sound), MP4 (AVC or MPEG-4 video with AAC sound) or WebM (VP8-coded video with Ogg sound). When MyTube BIGPACK 5 plays videos on the PC, there are no problems, but using the videos again on a different device can be difficult without converting them. This is because the range of different video playing devices supports lots of different attributes, including different sound and video formats, resolutions and image refresh rates.
The program’s converter function brings order to the chaos. It is split into sections for ‘Convert videos’ (turns, for example, an FLV clip into an MP4 clip for the PSP) and ‘Convert audio’ (extracts the audio from a video and converts it into a pure audio file).
Target formats
Set the target format you want in the program ‘Settings’. Depending on the target setting, you will activate either the ‘Convert videos’ or the ‘Convert audio’ tab, where you can select the target device for which you wish to produce a video or audio file based on the existing profile settings. If your device is not listed, you can configure the default target to the formats which can also be found in the profiles.
MyTube BIGPACK 5 supports AAC, MP3, OGG, Windows Wave and WMA audio formats and MP4, 3GP, AVI (DivX, Xvid), MPG, WMV, VCD, SVCD, MPEG-4 SP and AVC video formats. Among other things, the device profiles are based on a wide range of mobile and stationary media players, including simple MPEG-4 and DVD players, Nero Digital Player, DreamScrene, a range of multimedia players from Sony, Targa, Philips, iRiver, LG, Archos, Centrix, Apple and Creative, and various mobile phones, smartphones and games consoles (PSP, PS3, Xbox 360).
Convert videos/audio
To activate the function you require (‘Convert videos’ or ‘Convert audio’), click on the ‘Add’ button and browse to the location where you stored the downloaded videos. Select the clip(s) you want and then click on ‘Open’ (you can select multiple titles at the same time using the ‘Ctrl’ button).
The remaining settings are just as quick as adding the videos to be converted:
- Set the destination path.
- Click on ‘Start conversion’.
- Copy the finished files to your device.
The context-specific menu for the conversion list has various entries allowing you to remove a clip from the list, empty the list completely and access a cutting editor for the current video selected. The entries can also be selected and/or deselected and cover images can be found online which are then added to the compatible media files after conversion.
The cutting editor: Place the marker at the start of the sequence to be cut and click on the ‘Start’ button. Then move the marker to the end and click on ‘End’. Exit the dialog by clicking ‘Save’ if you wish to apply the cut or ‘Cancel’ if you wish to reject your changes. The part of the video which is outside the sequence you have cut is coded. The program shows the duration of the remaining video in the status bar.
